U-turn spring knocking - removing slight play?

Folks,
Posted a message a while back about the spring in my Tora u-turns making a knocking noise when compressed. It's a single knock per compression and it gets worse the further the fork is extended.
I've stripped the fork, cleaned and regreased the spring, replaced the oil etc. and it's still doing it. Further digging has me believing that there is a slight play in the spring helix(?) which is causing the knocking. This would support the noise getting worse with more travel. .
An FAQ on TFTuned suggests this is common with u-turn springs. It can be improved but not removed - the article unfortunately doesn't say how. Has anyone managed to solve it and have a simple solution? Pack with grease maybe, homemade washer?
There's also a black nylon sleeve on the spring - does anyone know the correct position of this sleeve - or does it matter? It moved when I was greasing the spring.
Cheers

Mine clanks a bit too. Make sure the negative spring isn't doing it, they can become displaced.
Grease is a good idea, slather up the helix and main spring.0 -
Cheers SS
Negative spring? Probably being an idiot but when I opened it there was 1 spring assembly which came out - have I missed something?

On mine there is a further spring that sits under the helix. About 3/4 of an inch long, with thin black spacers. It seems to flop abouit a bit lol.0

Thanks. I'll check it later and just grease everything in sight again. Do you know where the black sleeve should be positioned or does it just float?
thanks again for your help

I don't have any black sleeve on mine.
Though I bought the mechanism as spares.0 -
Hmmm. You can see what I mean on the picture in this thread:

I can't really see that it does much though.
Cheers again

Ah, that is stop the spring rubbing on the stancions. Can be a bit useless - many make their own out of an old inner tube.0

Ah ha. At least I now know what it’s for! I’ll strip it and regrease again and if it doesn’t improve the knocking I’ll live with it. At least striping and cleaning etc has shown that there’s nothing more sinister going on.
Cheers for the help
