Freehub grinding

It's a Deore freehub from 2003 and it's done about 500 miles now. (I didn't use the bike for years)

It's started grinding on a ride today in Rivington, I think it's bust. Also apparently it's a common fault.

So who makes good replacement freehubs? I don't really want to fork out for another Shimano one and have it fail again after 4 months of riding.

Unfortunately cost, as ever, is a problem... If I can't get it back up and running for next to nowt I'll be back on my 16 year old (and still on it's original freehub after thousands of miles) bike.

  • I'm not sure how common it is, but my 2003 Deore free hub packed up recently and it's only done 9000 miles! Anyway, I found it was cheaper to buy a complete new hub from Chain Reaction instead of just buy the freehub and swap the freehub (and ballbearings if you like).

Thanks, I'm coming to the same conclusion.

I was hoping it'd last till I could fork out for a new wheelset.
