9 speed cassette with 10 speed derailleur set up?
I have a 10 speed bike and have just bought (arriving soon) a trainer. I have a spare rear wheel with a 9 speed cassette on it and was going to put the new training tyre on that. Question is, can I run a 9 speed casette on a bike set up for 10 speed?

the distance between the gears on the cassette isnt the same with 9 and 10 speed, so it wont work very well.
Why dont you just buy a cheap 10 speed cassette and put that on your spare wheel

I suspected that may be the case. Thanks.0

True, it won't work properly and I wouldn't suggest the combination for use on the road. But a trainer is different because you'll probably not use the same range of gearing so I would say "try it ans see how it works" before buying a dedicated 10sp cassette.
The most likely result of 9sp on 10sp changers will be a double-shift at some point in the range. Most of my turbo training is done on one or two gears, I don't need accuracy over the whole range and hence that sort of thing works for me.
If you find it's not working, then rather than buy a cheap cassette for something that won't get a lot of mileage, why not buy decent quality & put the new stuff on your road bike and downgrade the old cassette for your trainer ?0
