I think that evans do free courses and there's a shop in Nottingham. Whilst I'm sure it's not as comprehensive as othersat least it won't cost you anything.
Here you go:

Google cycletech home mechanic course. I think a company called ATG run them in Manchester and Aylesbury (£280) and someone else in MK (£250). 2 day course and dead good for basics. I did Aylesbury and Jules was enthusiastic and knowledgeable.http://www.georgesfoundation.org

250 for a course? How about getting an old bike for 40 quid, stripping it right down and rebuilding it. Do a good job and you might even make a few quid! If you make a real mess of it just recycle it, nothing lost.
Can't beat the hands-on approach :-)http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

That's exactly what I did AFTER the course to make sure I had learnt the lesson. I was pretty clueless beforehand and it gave me the confidence to do everything and that I wasn't doing things "wrong". I now service and build all my own bikes so I reckon in 2 years I've saved that money in bike shop fees (esp as I source my own stuff on the net rather than paying shop prices for it).
£250 may seem like a lot, but I enjoyed it, learnt a lot and do things "properly" now. I'd like to get properly qualified - we'll see....http://www.georgesfoundation.org

Trouble is you are going to need a few tools as well, which would be a better use of the money IMO. If you have the motivation, I'd just start ... from a book, Sheldon and Park Tool. You quickly learn that there are some bike shop mechanics it is worth paying money to avoid.0 -
Yeah, I guess the £100 bike stand has to be counted against that too - but that was my best money spent on a "tool"....http://www.georgesfoundation.org
