Need Help Looking for a New Bike

Hey guys, as you see I am new to here. As I have been driving around, I see a lot of cyclists and everything and I deded I wanted to try this out. I have never owned a road bike before.
But anyways, I wanted to find a bike that will suit a beginner like me. I am looking to spend between $500-$1000. From what I have seen online from reviews and prices in the local shops near my town. I narrowed it down to the Trek 1.2 or the Cannondale CAAD8 8 that is within my price range. Can anyone give me any ideas on how to choose? Also, do you have any other suggestions on other bikes I should get as well as other tips like should I get a compact or triple (Do not really know what that is either)
