11-28 Rear cassette

I am running Shimano Ultegra with a 53/39 crankset. I am about to replace the 6600 Ultegra rear cassette 12-25 with an 11-28. I don't want to go down to a compact 50/36 or 34 just yet. I am worried that my standard cage derailleur wont cope with the 31 teeth differential (29 is the max on Durace is it different on Ultegra?). Has anybody out there had problems with the 11-28 shifting. I am aware I may need to adjust the back of the derailleur. Help please!

I've run 6600 mechs on 11-28 okay, and I've run a 7800 mech on a 11-28 and it didn't like it, even with the tension screw on max (and beyond). If you do a search you'll find this question has been asked a few times, and the basic response is.... it will probably be okay but you can't guarantee it unless you buy a 6700/7900 rear mechFacts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0

standard ultegra 6600 rear mech is 29t caacity
shimano also state largest sprocket is 27t for both standard and long cage 6600
ultegra 6700 is 33t capacity for the standard rear mech, and 28t largest sprocket (same for 105 5700)
you'll find full details on http://techdocs.shimano.commy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
Thanks guys. I think I will get the 6700 cassette,(11-28), see if it works and if not buy a 6700 rear mech as well. I will be back if I have any other probs. Once again cheers and happy riding0
