Hub choice, American Classics or DT Swiss?

Looking for a pair of new hubs and have narrowed it down to DT swiss or American Classics.

Price difference between the 2 different hubs on the wheels is quite a lot with the DT been the more expensive option.

Can anyone tell me if its going to be worth it in the long run going for DT Swiss hubs over American classics in the durability stakes? I dont mind paying the extra if they are going to cause me less hassle.

Someone mentioned the bearings not been that great in the AC hubs.

Small bearings in AC hubs, so they don't last as well as DT, I've a feeling it was me that said that last time!

IME DT are very very good, but you do need the service kit to get at the middle bearing. It's the last to go, but if your LBS don't have one it can get expensive!

Smaller flanges on DT hubs too, so they don't build quite as stiff a wheel, and 240s are very slightly heavier.

I'd go for AM Classics on a very light wheelset, or DT240s for more of all round set up.

The XTRs are worth a mention too. The rear hub is lovely, if slightly heavier than your other options.

At which point I'd also recommend Tune King/Kongs.

Sorry i should have mentioned i am limited in hub choice by the need for a 20mm front thru axle.

Yep njee20 thats exactly what you said before re the bearings. I dont mind shelling out more as long as its going to be worth it.

BTW before anyone says it i dont want Hope.

Oh tough choice this one, I love my DT240 hubs never given me a days problems on my Trek, However I'm looking round for a wheel-set fo my 29er and i keep getting drawn to the AC hubs for exactly the reason njee20 said above, i think the larger flange on the AC hubs will build into a stiffer wheel set esp important for a 29er wheel imo ? So it kinda depends what type of build you want tbh :) Glad i could help ....NOT lol

The 20mm AM Classic hub quite probably has larger bearings, I've only heard complaints about bearing life on the standard one.

Still going to be running the standard AC rear hub though. Also the 20mm AC front hub is a bit heavier than the DT.

Think i might go for DT's after searching around the net and asking on other forums.

    I really don't think you'll be disappointed with DT240's tbh :)

i have 240s and they really are good hubs, an absolute dodle to strip and clean, light, roll fast and the ratchet mechanism is so simple and bomb proof you would prob never ever have to touch it.

The DT240's are quiet in comparison to the Hope hubs arnt they?

Yer i'm not to kean on the noise hope hubs make but the 240's give .....a more sophisticated sound lol, not silent by any means but dont sound as agricultural as the hope hub's !
Sits back and waits for the flames :)

    Any particular reason?

    I'd get the DTs then.

The amount of noise they make is directly proportional to the amount of grease in them, so they get louder between services! Never as loud as Hope though.
