New rings for old

Hello, I have a 14 year old Orange C16 with Shimano LX components. The chainset is the old 5 arm type and the rings are getting quite worn. It seems that the 5 arm rings are now quite rare. The whole transmission needs renovating but I don't really fancy replacing the chainset if I can get rings to fit. I've found big and middle rings around the net but nobody has an LX 22T small ring as far as I can see. Does anybody know of a decent 5 arm 22T chainring that would be compatible and as hard wearing as the originals have proved to be? Thanks for any info. Cheers.

Middleburn is a very good chainring manufacturer

Just to give a wee alternative, the price of 3 rings, even basic ones is probably going to be more than the price of a complete deore crankset...Uncompromising extremist0

Thanks.
I'll investigate Middleburn.
I haven't found an LX chainset, old or new, for less than £60 and 3 rings don't amount to more than that. Also the new sets seem to favour Hollowtech bottom brackets so there'd be all that palaver to go through too. New rings seem to be the best route to perk up the bike....0 -
I do actually agree with Northwind.
The new Deore crankset is amazing VFM and would be your best option. All you would need to do is get your BB shell faced and fit.
If you buy it from your LBS, they will normally face and fit for free0 -
Agree with the others that a Deore HT2 chainset is the best option.0

Deore full chainset £50 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=40496
Although you'll need a BB as well!

+1 on deore, it is worth the faf.Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?0

TA do the chainrings. They're not cheap but they'll out last a new shimano set.Neil

That should include the BB.0 -
Thanks for all these replies. That chainset looks very interesting although closer to £60 than £50 at the Chain Reactions link. I expect that any difference in weight compared with the LX version will be more than offset by the pounds (or should that be stones?) I need to lose before becoming picky about that sort of thing. The CR price doesn't seem to include BB though. Nevertheless, it's a persuasive argument you are all coming up with....0

Pretty much all mtb cranks come with bb unless otherwise specified. Phone and check, but i'd assume it comes with.0
