Interesting comment from Obama, considering he's just sacked his General for bad mouthing him. Clearly Obama thinks he's more than one man.

    He got the peace prize for not being George Bush :?
    None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

    I suspect that if one of the general's underlings had badmouthed him in the national media the consequences would have been exactly the same - out of the job.

    A man in his position of military authority has no right to go on the public record undermining the authority of the elected government.

    In front of a select committee of congress, if asked for an opinion, he can give it, but to make unsolicited comments and undermine an elected president is outrageous.

    Internally, it's good for a general to question and challenge ideas on wars strategy, but to say publicly that he disagrees suggests that he has the RIGHT, to disagree with policy.
    He has no official say in policy, he is a soldier whose job is to follow the commands of the president. End of.

    I don't want an independant military that can choose to question or ignore the commands of its commander in chief.

    He didnt' question his orders or anything like that, he (and some of his aides) were quoted saying:

    About US ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl Eikenberry;
    "I like Karl, I've known him for years, but they'd never said anything like that to us before. Here's one that covers his flank for the history books. Now if we fail, they can say 'I told you so'."

    About US Envoy to Pakistan and Afganinstan, Richard Holbrooke;
    "Oh, not another e-mail from Holbrooke. I don't even want to open it."

    About dinner with French officials;
    "I'd rather have my ass kicked by a roomful of people than go out to this dinner... Unfortunately, no one in this room could do it."

    About Vice President, Joe Bidden;
    "Are you asking about Vice-President Biden? Who's that?"

    From one of his aides, regarding the McChrystals first meeting with Obama;
    "It was a 10-minute photo op,"........ "Obama clearly didn't know anything about him, who he was. Here's the guy who's going to run his fucking war, but he didn't seem very engaged. The Boss was pretty disappointed."

    Anyway, that's besides the point. My point was that Obama was saying that the War is bigger than McChrystal.

    However, many officails, military and civilian, American and Afgan, have stated that McChrystal is doing a good job and should stay, and removing him may damage the war effort. The war may be bigger than McChrystal, but in sacking him, it would appear that it's not bigger than Obama.

    Obviously, being seen to do something about McChrystal's comments is clearly more important than the war.
