Daft question about attaching bike to roof-rack
OK, so I've got some of those halfords bike holder roof-rack thingies and I need to put my bike on it. It's one of those where you strap the wheels in and clamp the downtube in place with an arm that reaches up from the rack.
Now I've done it a million times with my old alu framed bike and not given it a second thought, but having taken delivery of a carbon framed bike, I'm not so gung-ho. I guess I need to slacken off the clamp a bit, but is there anything else I should do too? Like wrap the frame in a bit of cloth or something?
Basically, I'm wary of cracking the frame - anyone else been similarly concerned?

Some cloth or thin sponge would probably be a good idea, if it fits snugly around the tube it should be fine. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

Not a daft question but I have been transporting my carbon frames this way for a few years without a problem but now I think I have done some damage to my frame clamping here.

As I posted to Brian's thread, take a read of the third question up from the bottom of this page http://www.carboncyclerepairs.co.uk/index.php?FAQ where a carbon fibre bicyle frame repairer offers advice about this exact subject....

I decided not to risk damaging my bike so bought a Thule rack that clamps the forks and the rear wheel.0

Clamped it loosely with some foam padding, which kinda worked but it did seem to be swaying a little.
Decided to try and get it in the boot on the way back and it fits, just about, with both wheels off. Result.0 -
if you need to use a clamp on it might be worth getting some helicopter tape. i use it on my mtb to stop scratches when its muddy or gritty0
