Which is more dangerous?

Mountain biking or road biking?

While we have 20-40mph collisions with trees and crack our heads/bones on sharp rocks, those loonies on the road have to trust that the next Chav driving a few tonnes of metal at 70mph won't mow them down on a twisty country lane.

What do you guys think?

P.S. Not sure if this has been asked before so apologies if it has.

Both as it depends what the circumstances of the crash are and how lucky / unlucky you've been. I've come off at 20 mph and got a few scrapes and bruises and limped off, I fell off sideways at what might well have been 4 mph and completely fucked my rib cage up.

I'd say more accidents off-road. But unlikely to be killed. On road less crashes but when one comes along it could be the last one.

And off road crashed at 20mph to 40mph??? Not me! not yet anyway. 40mph ooff road would be scary!

Lorry drivers, buses, OAP's and spotty teenagers in control of tons of metal, road riding for sure is more dangerous.... trees dont pull out on you on the trails. :x

Off road you are in control - fall off you were probably going too fast.
On road - plenty of mobile idiots.
I do both and get more adrenalin off road, but more fear on road
    I don't do smileys.

Yep, there's always some blind 140 year old man pulling out on to a roundabout in front of you at 3mph!

Some bikers I have seen on the road should not be in charge of a bike - a danger to themseleves.

I hope the police find out who they were and throw the key away, fecking ridiculous, no wonder we have a bad name amongst motorists.

no point taking to the public highway if you're not at least gonna follow the basic rules.
guy on bike in last 30 secs of film who went straight into blokes on a pedestrian zone -
i'd have wasted him with his own d-lock.
meh , its no surprise being London though , everyones up their own arse in that place.

My experience: Definitely road, at least what occurs off-road is mostly my own doing.

    Last few occasions on road:

    a) Some sort of large block ice-lolly thrown at me by a group of chavs in a Corsa as they pass

    c) Plank of a man changing lanes and not looking, sending me flying off my cycle = breaking wrist and requiring shoulder surgery.. jolly stuff! Haven't seen anything else recently.. because the surgery means I cannot cycle.

Faith in the general public to be observant/Follow Highway Code/not be pricks.. Nah.

Wow, those stupid tw@s singlehandedly do more damage to cycling than any brain-dead chav ever could. I like to go a bit mental when I'm on the road, but riding without helmets, hitting pedestrians, and flying through intersections is taking it a bit far.

I've hurt myself equally doing both, I just consider road riding the same as MTB except the trees move, are not made of wood and can often contain equally dense material...
