What Grinds Your Gears?

I was inspired to start this thread after my ride yesterday.

A driver sprayed his windscreen fluid which seem to be directed to land on his roof not once, not twice, not three times, not four times but five times. With the wind it was flying everywhere.

Luckily I held back after the first time but he decided to carry on doing this at 10 mph meaning having to hold back waiting for him to finish his ocd windscreen cleaning which wasn't even reaching his windscreen. The driver behind him was also not best pleased as his car was getting soaked with every squirt.

Busses - need i say anymore.

Cars who creep out at junctions to get a head start meaning they drive over the bike lanes which entails in having to swerve around them with oncoming traffic coming from behind.

Dog walkers with uncontrollable dogs who decide to run out in front of you.

Cyclists who cycle on lanes in pairs and wont budge or give you enough room to pass even if they are aware of your whereabouts causing you to cycle around them on the grass.

There's loads more but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Please share your cycling annoyances :)

speeders espicially old men in their convertables piss me off....
cars think they own the road also when they speed past you and pretty much cut u off when they turn a corner 10m infront of u!
taxis, they never give you any room
MTBers always slow then you have to wait for like 5 mins to get past themas u get go out wide enough because the is lorries passing you every 5 secs!

You're pushing against an open door here. Have a look at the Rants thread over at the other place. 78 pages and counting so far. :)

I expected there to be a similar thread, just didn't know where to look. I found it hard to imagine a cycling forum without a thread to vent frustration.:)

As said above I didn't realise there was such a thread. I'm new here, it's not as if I know what threads have and haven't been started.

People who throw their fag ash out of the window. People who throw cans in cycle lanes, yes I mean you, you big fat blob on Bury road 2 weeks ago. Littering in general, stop being so f***ing lazy and use the bins.

People who think breaking glass in the road is some kind of English Sporting event

The wind. Why is there NEVER a tailwind and always a Headwind!!

Chavs shouting "Can I have a go"

European Lorry drivers passing so close the Wing mirrors actually go over my head.

13 Year old chavs on MTB's that think its hilarious to stop while riding across a dual carriageway and watch as I bear down on them only to move out of the way in the last second.

Roads in such poor repair my tyres would prefer a jaunt through bullet torn Beirut.

All cyclists grumble, even if its an internal monologue =P

    Adding to my list:

Cyclists that dont moan about the stuff that we generally moan about

    Oh go on then.

Builders who move my bike and scratch my Ultegra sl bits and my frame and are all flippant about it.
Oh yes and i too hate people who rush past just to join a traffic jam or turn off straight in front of me.

van drivers who pull out of side roads and drive straight toward me forcing me to hop up onto the pavement to avoid getting hit, then hearing/seeing them laugh at me whilst they drive off..

What I do like tho is seeing them park up two minutes later and leave the van unattended...

    Cleats 1 - 0 Van door

luckilly its not an area I ride in often (or ever again really).

been meaning to sign up here for a while.

People who are afraid to pull up along side you while you are in a cycling lane, so they creep behind you. It just makes me really uncomfortable.

cycling lanes were just put in the downtown area where I live and a lot of people still seem kind of confused about them. Some people use them like turning lanes
ANYONE CREEPING INTO A CROSSWALK when I am cycling from a bike trail to another which involves a crosswalk.
oh and of course anyone who likes to break glass on paved roads and especially on bike trails.

edit: but in the end of the day/ride it doesn't really matter as long as my bike and myself (in that order) are okay.

Kids who think they can race me and then shout abuse when they can't. Ignorant cyclists who can't even be arsed to simply nod when they pass me; we're in the same sodding sport, grow some courtesy...LOUD MOTORBIKES THAT SHOOT PAST YOU AT 80MPH IN A 25MPH ZONE - morons.

It's angry rabbit night and I'm on the roads tonight, watch out!
  • During the winter I encountered pedestrians using the cycle lane as it had be gritted. Couldn't believe what I was seeing.

The whole ignorant cyclist thing can be excused in my opinion... I nod, wave, say hi to everyone I pass and a lot of the time they dont respond. Usually its because they are TTing like a mothaf**ker and cant spare the energy!

im sure when Im giving it some welly Ive missed a wave or nod!

That said, I have something to add to my list.

Drivers on a Dual carriageway that pass you, pull to a stop at traffic lights and quite deliberately maneuver to the left to stop you passing and sitting in the cycle box. I could quite happily drag them out and batter them with my D Lock.

I used to nod as I thought it was bike etiquette but I end up with to many strange looks from fellow cyclists. :D

When doing the London to Windsor ride last year, I got some funny looks from fellow cyclists for waving and saying hello to a jogger! Apparently I made some faux pas by acknowledging someone without wheels as a human =P

Whether Im cycling, running, walking the dogs, hanging out at the gym, or whatever, I always have the courtesy to nod, say morning, or just generally acknowledge someone. Don't really know where people get off being so ignorant.
