Have any of you taken advantage of it and if so how?
I contacted Madison about a faulty rear mech and they told me to contact the shop where I bought the bike which is Dales in Glasgow. They said they would contact Specailized as it`s a Specialized bike but that was weeks ago and i`m having no joy with them.
I was thinking i`d just buy a new rear mech and perhaps take the old one to my nearest "Shimano servive centre" and see what happens. Anyone had any luck with Shimano warranties on their bike parts or am I wasting my time?

if the rear mech was part of the bike you bought, then the applicable warranty/guarantee is the one on the bike, you've got no warranty entitllement with shimano unless it explicitly says so in the documentation you received with the bike

is the bike still within its warranty/guarantee period? if you aren't getting anywhere with the shop tell them you'll report them to trading standards (and do it, they'll advise you how to enforce your rights)

you could try complaining direct to specialized, but they may just respond that your contract is with the shop and that's who should be sorting it out for you

you might be able to get away with putting the old one in as you describe, but if is identifiable as an oem part then they'll know what's going on, and again you'd might just be told to go via the shop you bought it from

maybe not what you want to hear, but i've been in a similar situation with some electronics, in the end the trading standards people gave me the advice on how to get things put right - it worked

Hi, I expect you are correct but the bike is 20 months old and it says on the Shimano website that all their parts are guaranteed for 2 years and on the Spesh website that all warranty issues re. components are always with the manufactuterers, that`s why I was going to take it to a shimano service centre. I`ll give the shop another chance then get heavy.

Ant, your contract's with the shop. If you're entitled to any recompense, then it should be the shop that sorts it out for you.

what specialized says on their website has no validity unless you bought via that website and it formed part of the contract of sale

shimano's website will be talking about buying a shimano product as a standalone purchase, their sales as an oem to specialized would have completely different terms and are not a contract with you

what counts is the law and the contract between you and the place you bought from

you've got no contract with shimano or specialized

it won't hurt to ask shimano and/or specialized, maybe you'll get luck and they'll help sort things out, but they've got no obligation to

if you get nowhere with the shop, contact trading standards for advice, they'll explain your general rights and suggest a course of action, this website can be useful...

  • Your contract is definitly with the shop and anything you bought has to be 'fit for purpose'.
Put in writing what you want and give the shop a time scale to sort it out. If they don't then you must be prepared to take it further.
It has been known for suppliers to suddenly become cooperative when threatened with
adverse publicity by you contacting a national newspaper with the circumstances and requesting their help.
Best of luck with it. :)

Thanks for all the advice, anyway I rang Specailized today and they were helpful .They said I should take the bike to a Spesh dealer who would asess it and possibly replace the deraileur and that the shop may charge for the labour which I could claim back from Dales.
