Hi i have just placed a 9 spd Ultegra 5600 cassette onto my bike, it currently has a SRAM chain on it. It does change gears OK, but there is a strange sound as i ride coming from the cassette area, is the SRAM chain OK with this cassette or do i need a Shimano one ? i seem to recall something about it needing a narrow shimano chain ?

regards

Neil

If its a 9 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette, it really doesn't make any difference.

The problems come when you haven't "re-indexed" the gears and fitted a brand new chain to an old cassette or visa versa.

If you haven't reset the gears, then I imagine there will be a small amount of slipping going on, in terms of not quite enagaging at the right spot.

If its a new chain/cassette on a old cassette/chain then its going to take a whille to bed in and will then wear out much much quicker.

As above, it could just be an adjustment is required or is the chain too worn for a new cassette :?:
Simple check is to measure a 12inch section of the chain (say from one edge of a pin to the corresponding edge 12inches on)
If it is spot on 12inches then all is well, if it is 1/16 longer then a new chain is required.
Any 9 speed chain would do, most people recommend SRAM or KMC as both have quick connecting links.

  • thanks for the tips, i have ordered a new sram chain that will come in the next few days hopefully so will put on the bike with my new cassette and re index the gears
