I'm on the lookout for a new set of brakes - currently have avid Juicy 3's which are great as far as power is concerned but I'm not too keen on how they actually apply the power. The first 3/4 of lever travel do nothing and then the power seems to come all at once making them easy to snatch at and not great for control.

With that in mind, which are good brakes in terms of smooth modulation? They don't have to be the most powerful in the world. I'm just looking for relible (fairly powerful) but where the power is spread more evenly across the lever travel.

My budget is around £150ish so was thinking Hayes stroker, Avid Elixir 5s, SLX, hope m4s etc I've already got an avid bleed kit so if there are any avid brakes that fit the bill then that would be great but certainly not essential.

would appreciate any info
