Voodoo Bokor or Cube Ltd Pro??

Hi all

I'm new to these forums but they look friendly so wanted to fish for some advice.

My current bike (an old Apollo Slammer) is reaching the end of its life and I'm reluctant to spend any money on replacing parts for it. Work have just signed up to the Cycle 2 Work scheme and so I now have the option of £1000 to spend on a new bit of kit.

Having looked around at reviews I think I have narrowed it down to 2 bikes, the Voodoo Bokor (£749.99 from Halfords) and the Cube LTD Pro 2010 (£859 from Tredz). The Bokor seems to get rave reviews and looks fairly well spec'd but has the down side of being supplied by Halfords (I have very little confidence in their abilities). That said, it is still my favourite at the moment. The Cube, however, seems more race focussed and with a view to getting into XC events may be better suited to needs.

Does anyone have any advice or opinions on whether the Cube is worth the extra £100? I will try out the Voodoo at the weekend but am still trying to find a local dealer for the Cube.

Thanks in advance.

Olly

You need to find out which scheme your employer is using, not all vouchers can be used in all shops

If it's the halfords scheme you may not be able to use it elsewhere. Halfords only take their own vouchers, no-one elses.

The Cube has a better drivetrain, brakes, tyres & finishing kit to the Voodoo which has a better fork.

The Cube is not a true race bike, it still has XC/trail geometry

  • Thanks for the info.

We are not limited to just Halfords (thankfully) so I am free to shop around a bit. I cannot justify, or run to the expense of, a true race bike so was looking for something that would be suitable as a beginners bike for racing but still comfortable for long weekend rides.

Would the better fork on the Voodoo be enough to pass over the kit on the Cube??

Looking at the kit I think there is not much in it - swings and roundabouts as Andy says. The fork is very good for that money though, and nice wheelset too on the Voodoo.

But you could look at the Boardman Comp too.
  • Cheers.

Have tried the Boardman but just didn't like it, can't say why though, just didn't feel right. Are there any other recommendations for that price bracket that would cope with some XC racing?

Guess I will have to try them both out and see which one suits. Hopefully I may be able to coerce Halfords into a cheeky discount.

How about a Cube LTD Race (£949), it has an awesome spec for the money

Reba SL's, XT mech's, SLX shifters, Sun Ringle wheelset, Formula RX brakes, Easton finishing kit...

Ok it's more £££ than your other choices, but it a much better spec & well worth a look

Get the Bokur from Halfords and get your LBS to set it up - its a brilliant bike - someone else liked mine so much they nicked it

  • Thanks all for your help, am now more confused than before!!!!

Think I might try out the Bokor at lunchtime with sensible money head on and see whats what. However, am now seriously tempted with the Cube Ltd Race (am sure I can get somewhere to drop £39 off the price) give its decent spec and the fact its a kilo lighter than the Bokor and Ltd Pro. For the sake of another £12 a month I think it might be worth it??

Edit: Just read on the Cube website that the Ltd Team is only 10.8kg. Is that right, seems very light?

I read somewhere that the weight specified (10.8kg) for the LTD Team is a typo and it should be 11.8kg.

Fair enough, though it sounded light!
