Compatability of parts when upgrading from 8spd to 9spd

I'm looking to upgrade my 8 speed SRAM X4 shifter and SRAM X5 rear derailleur to a 9 speed Shimano SLX and Shimano SLX Shadow rear derailleur. Will these Shimano components work with an 8speed cassette?
