Does anybody know a good white cycling top that doesn't go transparent when it's wet ? I'd like a white top with some black to match my bike (it has to be mostly white as I won't wear black on the bike due to visibility problems), but don't want to look like an escapee from a wet tee shirt competition.

I quite fancy the Castelli Prologo or Giordana Silverline, anybody got any experience of them ?

Assos Mille comes in white with black detailing. Beautiful quality but shop around as some asking over £130 - I bought mine for £106 from LBS but had to haggle.

I've gone from combat shorts and battered hoodies and moderate responses from people on the road to like a twilight zone today. I was wearing proper cycling shorts, UnderArmour lycra long sleeve top with my new 2010 Liquigas team shirt over it and some of the responses from people were as if I was on another level. :D

Even joggers one especially give me a proper respect nod, it was funny. .

I've noticed that I get far more positive acknowledgment from other roadies as well as joggers, laydeez on horseback and even car drivers giving me more respect etc whilst wearing a team jersey than just a plain one. I wouldn't wear the full team kit though, jersey is enough for me.

At the end of the day it's what your comfortable with, I have no adverse feelings if I see a fully lycra clad experten on a £2k bike or someone wearing a tee-shirt & baggies. :)

  • For the price, the Aldi apparel is really good. The shorts are extremely comfortable.

In regards to the team shirts I see nowt wrong with wearing them, although they may come off as pretentious to others. It's similar to football fans wearing their favourite team colours.

Although I must admit I did have a quiet chuckle when I saw a guy wearing a skin tight Astana kit the other day which didn't do his beer belly any justice. :D

Thanks, I was hoping for something in the £50 - 70 price range, but if I need to go to this price I guess I will. Just one last point ALaPlage - Can I blame you when the wife asks how much it was ?

Don't knock the benefits of wearing Astana kit. I was on the Richmond 5 Dales, trogging up to Tan Hill and I saw a bloke pull over to the side of the road in Astana kit. Immediately, the Richmond Cycle Club support car appeared from nowhere and pulled over to ask if he needed help. Never happened to me in my Aldi softshell

Try here - prices have gone up a little but plenty of white and black and I doubt that the sportwool will go see through. Very nice stuff.

You said that they're not far off Assos in terms of comfort, which I assumed to be not as good as. Not that Assos are cool either, but at least the brand has some substance.

It's hard what to ask or look for though when you want good shorts. I mean you can get a team kit which you mite want then you end up with bad padding etc etc. Is their a gradiant in shorts you can ask for, for instance hi can I have the team sky jersey and shorts but can I have a level 5 padded shorts which indicates what padding you want.

I would much prefer to wear something ugly and be comfortable than something cool and slick but be to sore to ride the next day. I'm doing lejog on 1st of july so 4 weeks away would love to get decent kit that doesnt sacrifice the padding.

Thanks for all the info on here though I can't believe how much imput and advice their has been.

If you havent already got your bum used to long distance cycling then I dont think you will find magic shorts in time to make the journey comfy. For me certainly - more padding isnt the answer. If anything my assos shorts are a bit too padded.

What shorts do you have at the moment ?

I got tempted to go down the team replica route and bought a Caisse d'epargne shirt. The plan was to match the red/white black colourscheme of the Synapse. However, and I'm sure I'm not the first to find this out, even XXXL was a little, ahem, snug round the middle. Common sense got the better of me after much soul searching, and it went back to Wiggle to be replaced by a Shutt VR jersey in black with red & white stripes. If I say so meself it looks well smart and has a cut more suitable for the less ripped waistline. This is what I got, and so far no complaints, but a few very positive comments.

Nice one TiBoy. Used code CW2 when purchased, and got for £60. Sounds like discounts are available regularly then? Interestingly (I think), I was buying on line in work and got to checkout only to find a little glitch which stopped procedings for a moment. Being in work, I had to go do a bit, and later found an email from Shutts Sales/Marketing Manager asking if there was a prob. Told him what happened and in fairness he sorted out the prob sharpish, and I bought it. Nice touch I thought.

I like colourful kit, partly for safety.

I often get MTB team shirts because they're just as 'busy' but they don't have the baggage of the road-team stuff (who wants to buy a shirt and then find it associated with the world's worst doper?). As an added bonus, an MTB shirt might wind up roadie purists.

My profile picture is a shirt my sister bought me from here:
