Compact to double
I have searched and found nothing covers subject completely. Am converting my race bike to a double from a compact as am spinning out during races (and also more comfortable a la Ullrich in bigger gears).
as far as I can gather I will have to swap over cranks. raise front mech a few mm and readjust/tension cable.
Will I have to use a new chain?

depends how long your current chain is.
Probably. You could either fit a longer one or add in a few links to your current one, depending on what type you run.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
You do not need to change your crankset. You can get 110mm BCD rings right up to 60 teeth from TA and 53 from Stronglight.

You will probably need 1 or 2 extra links in the chain.0 -
