I have searched and found nothing covers subject completely. Am converting my race bike to a double from a compact as am spinning out during races (and also more comfortable a la Ullrich in bigger gears).

as far as I can gather I will have to swap over cranks. raise front mech a few mm and readjust/tension cable.

Will I have to use a new chain?

depends how long your current chain is.

Probably. You could either fit a longer one or add in a few links to your current one, depending on what type you run.

You do not need to change your crankset. You can get 110mm BCD rings right up to 60 teeth from TA and 53 from Stronglight.

You will probably need 1 or 2 extra links in the chain.
