Hi im hoping someone can help me with my back wheel problem.

I recently Brought a new wheelset some Mavic XC717 rims on deore hubs for my Cove Handjob.

But i think i chose unwisely as at 20 stone i keep bending (buckling) the back wheel and its getting exspensive to have my LBS true them twice a month.

So im looking for a very strong back wheel witch matches the front wheel (like to keep things looking equal). This isnt massively essential as long as its got black rims and spokes i think it will be fine.

My budget is around £80-100

Thanks for any Help

P.S weight isnt an issue for the wheel as im a realy heavy guy so i wont notice it :)
and the bike is used to commute and hammer round follow the dog and monkey trail at the weekends.

I used to ride on Halo Freedom wheels and was very impressed.

They were the fastest rolling stiffest rims I had ever written at that time.

I have now gone handbuilt high budget stuff, but still nothing rolls faster or is stiffer than the Halo offerings.

    Oh, I was also 18st but now 14-15 (thanks cycling =-) )
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?

Ive been doing a bit of reading and some people suggest that a wheel even a strong one will buckle if it is built poorley.

So Could it be case of good wheel poorley built or am i just to fat for an Xc wheel and need a DH wheel

I've been running 717 rims albeit on Hope hubs for over a year with out any issues. I'm not as big as you not far off though, damn hotel living, so you maybe on to something with the build quality.

On the other hand it maybe down to riding style, I'm definately a more wheels on the ground XC rider than a I must get air off every jump type. So the rim super suggests maybe better suited for your style plus get it built by someone good e.g. Merlin.

Funny that they came from merlin :D

    http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/mountain- ... black.html

My style is quite tame i dont go mental up cannock but i do have a love affair with steps i see them as a bit of a challange lol.

When i had them from the sales section at merlin they were all ready built up and when they arrived they wasnt true so maybe they had a work exsperince kid in that day as merlin are surposed to be the dogs danglees for wheel building.

I think since ive had them about 6 months ive broken 6 spokes so far but the LBS i was using to fix them at the time was rubbish ive changed to another now and the last time i broke a spoke he trued it realy well but was out a little after a day of commuting ?

Maybe some better spokes might help ? not sure where i could buy them and whats good and whats not though

Maybe try speaking to Merlin? They've always been good when I've rung them.

As for spokes I'll leave that for someone who knows more about wheels than I do.

Maybe its just time to suck it up and learn how to true a wheel witch is a bit of a dark art unless anyone has any suggestions ?

Just had another thought i run my pressures quite high about 50psi i figure because im heavy they need to be that high to stop pinch flats and that kinda thing but im i hurting the wheel more having it that hard ?

If the wheel is warped it will never true and tension correctly.
