Rim damage question

Yesterday I suffered a nasty puncture. I'm not sure what caused it, but it sliced clean through my tyre and inner tube (I can fit a finger in the hole). However, it also sliced into the rim, on the braking area. My question is whether this will cause a problem. There is certainly a bit of a lip on the rim where this has happens, which concerns me. I can imagine it damaging my brake pad pretty quickly.

Is there something I can use to smooth it down, while not damaging the rim area around it? I guess I can't do much about the indent from whatever caused the puncture, but would like to get rid of the lip.

File it down using a fine file to eliminate any grooves / stress-raisers. Depends on how deep the groove is.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Are you 100% sure it sliced through the rim or is the rim very worn?Sometimes when a rim wears through it can look like its been sliced.
If this is the case its a new wheel or a new rim.

Its definitely a groove in the rim from whatever caused the puncture. Basically the tyre is completely sliced (some of the rubber, the whole sidewall and the innertube). This then continues with the groove on the rim, so clearly it is all part of the same event.

I've bought some wet and dry, so will give that a go. If it does help a little I guess I need to keep a close eye on the wheel to make sure the damage isn't structural.
