Stupid question - Building gear cables

Ok so i've got sram X7 shifters, come with perfectly good cables but just the cable inners.

I obviously need cable outers, and ferules, but which ferrules and/or other parts do i need?

I'm a bit lost as to this as normally i would have this done for me by the shop but id like to save money and do it myself.

some gear outer and as many gear ferules as you need.

plus come good Cable cutters and an awl.

What is this Awl you speak of!

Also do i need ferrules for the lever adjusters/mech adjusters?

levers yes. mechs yes and no.

Dare i ask where i would use that in this process? i assume for ensuring cable outers have a sufficient sized hole?
