9 Speed DA Cassette & freehub problems

Bought a bike with 9 speed Dura-Ace set-up but cannot get the casette to fit a set of Fulcrum 7 wheels (which I assume have a 10 speed only freehub) and therefore have problems with the depth of the spines..

Is it possible to buy a Shimano 8/9/10 freehub instead, rather than upgrade to 10 speed Dura-Ace shifters, cassette etc, which would obviously be more expensive? How easy is it to swap the freehubs on the wheels?

My DA cassette is exactly the same as the one in this thread (although it's not my thread)

Anybody offer any links to the above 8/9/10 Shimano freehubs?

Your Fulcrum 7 wheels do have a Shimano-compatible body rather than Campag-compatible don't they? If not sure, Shimano cassettes have 9 splines, one of which is wider than the others, while Campag cassettes have one spline of a different shape.

I was under the impression that the only Shimano pattern freehub bodies which had taller splines were the alloy ones on early 10 speed DA hubs/wheels and on one model of Ultegra 10 speed wheels. Later ones are all 8/9/10 speed compatible.

If the splines are in fact the same as the early Shimano 10 speed ones and you have access to a lathe - and can get the body off the hub - you could just turn the splines down to the normal 8/9/10 speed diameter. Alternatively, or if you have a Campag-compatible body this should be swappable for a Shimano-compatible one, but no idea where to get it or how much, sorry.

I have to agree with satanas sounds like you have either got a Campag or a 10spd only shimano Freebody on the hub.

the Cassette in the link is a standard shimano pattern one that will fit any shimano/sram 8/9/10 speed body.

It's definitely a Shimano freehub but as I felt, it is I believe 10 speed only I imagine.

Is it easy to convert the freehub to 8/9/10 by buying a new hub. The other alternative, which I am considering is selling the DA 9 speed components and putting on a 10 speed 105 groupset instead.

you should be able to just swap out the freebody its self

and here we are (though it may not be the actual one you need)

Wait a minute! When you say "depth of the splines" do you mean their length (left to right) or their diameter???

If the problem is that there is play when the cassette is on the hub and the lockring is tightened, you may just need to add a thin spacer behind the cassette. Note that with the alu Shimano bodies I mentioned above there was NO NEED to use a spacer behind the cassette, but with every other cassette body (i.e., 8/9/10 speed compatible), a 1mm spacer must be used behind a 10 speed cassette. This should have come in the box with your cassette.

The only exception to this I know of is the Shimano-compatible body on some older Mavic wheels. These used slightly longer splines than normal so that there was enough room for a Campag-10 speed-spaced Mavic cassette to fit; with these bodies an extra Mavic spacer (1.8mm?) must be used AS WELL AS the Shimano 1mm 10 speed spacer if you are using a Shimano 10 speed cassette; if 8/9 speed then only the Mavic spacer is needed. FWIW, 1/16" Sturmey-Archer spacers work too.

I wasn't aware that you could get Shimano 10-only freehub bodies for Fulcrum R7

The parts document on Fulcrum's website
    http://www.fulcrumwheels.com/repository ... -02-10.pdf
    p29 lists two freehub bodies
    - R5-014 for Campy (sic) 9-10-11
    - R5-020 for HG 8-9-10
The R5's use the same freehubs too, R3's R1's & Zeroes use a different one

However, ChainReaction are listing three different hub bodies
    - this one for Campag http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=26477
    - this one for Shimano 8/9/10 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=26478
    - and this one for Dura Ace 10sp http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=26479
Looking at the pictures, I don't see a lot of difference in the spline heights of the two Shimano ones, but I suppose it's possible there is/was a 10sp-only, deeper-spline version...

Why not buy the 8/9/10 version, before trying to fit to wheel just see if your cassette will fit on it and if not you send it back for a refund.

Fitting is easy, I've had my R5's apart and relubed as the pawls were getting a bit sticky and sometimes not engaging.
If I remember rightly, it was just undo the hub nuts, drive the axle out with a bit of gentle tapping, pull the freehub off. Then to refit, tie bit of string round the pawls to hold them in and fit partway onto hub & axle, remove string, retighten hubnuts.
