I have ridden there once or twice
There is loads of singletrack hidden away, it is not easy to give a description of how to find it, the best thing is just explore. Park up near the Basingstoke Canal Centre and head up Tunnel Hill. Porridge Pot and Frith Hill also have lots of trails.0 -
just keep an eye for squadies0

Well, I tried it yesterday after work, and to be honest found it very frustrating. We parked 600m after Keogh Barracks and entered on a fire road. The singletrack we did find was nice, but kept ending really quickly, so we struggled to link anything together. Guess it's lack of local knowledge. We gave up in the end and went to The Lookout.
Here's a link to the route we did if there's anyone out there that can tell me if we were anywhere near the good stuff.

PS On the google map, which bit is Tunnel Hill?0 -
You rode near some good trails... A lot of the singletrack is fairly short, but if linked together can seem pretty none stop.
The area you rode is all Tunnel Hill. Porridge Pot Hill is across the canal (take Brunswick Road on the map and go left into the woods when you get to the locked army gates) PP Hill goes all the way to The Maultway. Frith Hill is the otherside of Deepcut Bridge Road.
If you want a guided tour of the area let me know and I can show you round some time. I only live about 10 minutes away.0 -
Of that map, there's more stuff to the right of where you rode, down both sides of the railway cutting. One side is full of natural steep gravel and bomb holes. The other wooded with a mix of short singletrack and some extra special stuff if you find it. I won't point out exactly where as there's concern about it being advertised too much. Just explore or find someone to show you around.
I know only a fraction there and still get lost and miss things even though it's not that big an area. Much of the stuff there is well hidden. Have yet to explore Porridgepot (is that a red flag area, and also where the big heath fire was recently?), and the other side of Mytchett Place Road I think has more to explore, but again is red flag area.
Tunnel Hill Trolls (JasonRwmb being involved with them I see ) are supposedly a good guide, but they seem to like night rides (not to mention they're probably far fitter than I am ).
And yeah, don't be surprised if you turn a corner and half the British Army is facing you. Or you're riding along and run over a squaddie hiding in the undergrowth0 -

Porridgepot is managed access the same as Tunnel Hill. As far as I know, the heath fire was further up towards Lightwater/Red Road area which is very much restricted.
I went over to Porridgepot for the first time last night (only for 20 mins or so as an add-on to a Tunnel Hill route) and picked up part of the Are You Tough Enough course - seems like fun so I'll have to go back and explore some more. As the race was the day before, one section even helpfully had a 'Chicken Run' sign still up0 -
The chicken run just avoided an good little bombhole, you should've ignored it :-)0
-
I was out riding with wifey and she didn't want to go through the bombhole, so I took the chicken run as well so as not to make her feel bad. Or something0
-
I've only recently been riding over Tunnel Hill, despite living in Aldershot for the past year and a half..
I've still got to find a lot of it, but am loving every minute of what I have found so far!
Shall probably be exploring a bit more tomorrow evening, so if you see a sweaty mess on a carbon 456 (me), and an even sweatier mess on a Spesh FSR XC (my bro), say hi
FAO: Tunnel hill trolls - great work over there guys, and if you ever need a hand digging/maintaining the trails, let me know0 -
I was in that race and believe it or not some of the top riders (who were lapping me for the second time!) were taking the chicken run. I am not a great rider but it was no big deal to go through the bomb hole, in fact it was alot of fun.
I know they probably have fragile cross country machines that weigh nothing but it was annoying as they had already overtaken me, then I had to pull over again as I re-took them by taking the propper route!0 -
Pretty surprised by that to be honest, I can't see any reason why any of the top top guys would avoid it. XC bikes aren't that fragile!0

Went there with deadkenny today, there is some really nice stuff but we didn't link it up very well, there are some huge (for me anyway) jumps hidden all over there too.
I got distracted by the chicken run sign and stopped at the top of the bomb-hole :roll:And now you know, and knowing is half the battle
