Car tyres.

I have a big dilemma here and want to know what you would do in the same situation.

2 front tyres are low and need changing, rears have recently been changed.

Current tyres are 195/55/15 and are bloody brilliant.
2 tyres that match the rear in this size will cost me £150 fitted.

or

i can get 4x tyres that are just as good, but in 195/50/15.
4 tyres would cost me £170 fitted.
But i'd lose the tyres on the rear that are almost new....

Its a moral dilemma! I don't like chucking away stuff that works, but then I don't wanna sped a load of cash on 2 tyres!

Meh. bloody cars!

Not sure where you'd sell them but there is a market for part worn tyres. People like you that want good tyres but don't have the budget for brand new.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

either this, or, get the 4 new tyres, and tell the garage that's fitting them that you want the rear 2 tyres and ebay them.
It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Which of those sizes is the proper rolling diameter for your car. I'd say take the right size ones

If you don't mind your car having a slightly firmer ride (195/50/15 will have a smaller side wall than a 195/55/15 making the tyre stiffer) then go for the 4 new ones and tell the tyre fitter you want to keep the 2 rears and put them on ebay. Plenty of people out there wanting part worn tyres.
  • hmm you've all said the exact things going through my mind lol.

well the car came with 195/55/15 so i'd like to stick with that tbh... just the tyres are like 25% more expensive!

I do know that 195/50/15 is fine though, as the majority of owners switch to them.

go the for 50's and sell them on ebay, I had a guy drive 150 miles to pick up two part worns of my Jeep when I went to bigger tyres (although 4x4 tyres are stupid expensive).

the 50's ar a slightly smaller diameter than the 55's which would improve the acceleration and cornering of the car giving you a more responsive ride, go for the 4 new tyres and keep the 2 new ones and sell them on, you won't get very much for them but it would contribute to the cost of getting 4 making it cost about the same as buying the 2 tyres. or sell them to the garage

As the op is in the north west, (possibly wigan way?) give pemberton tyres http://www.pembertontyres.co.uk/index.php?act=home a call about a pair new or part worns, about the best value to sevice I have come across and they will probably do a deal if you mention your other offer.

what make are the tyres, big diff from cheap new to decent new!

My old chap has got a tyre place, so I would always recommend new - as I have seen some horrific 2nd hand tyres
  • Well.

Going to either go for the same again, or change to some proxes.

The change in profile will hardly be noticable in ride comfort or handling. It will effect your gearing by a reduction of 3.5% and therefore your speedo reading will also be slightly out and MPG increased. Over the life of the tyres the money saved on cheaper tyres would be be offset against your slightly increased fuel costs. You will also need to inform the insurance company as it would be classed as a modification and you hate to have a claim voided just because of penny pinching on tyres.

Proxes aren't too bad. My wife has just had them fitted to her Sport Ka and give better MPG and ride comfort than the Pirelli Nero's they replaced. Time will tell how they wear in comparison.

I'll be getting a new car in the Autumn, so I'll look after that one a bit more.
