chain length

I have just put together a campagnolo 9spd chainset and it seems all ok except when I am on the small chainring (42t) and change down towards the smaller cogs on the back the chain appears to have too much slack and rubs on the underneath of the rear derailleur (derailleur is unable to take anymore slack). This happens from the 4th cog from the big cog onwards. It is a new campag 9spd chain and I assumed the chain lengh would be correct. Should I remove a link or will this affect the shifting?

Thanks for any help.

Did you fit the chain straight out of the packet? If so, it will invariably be too long. You need to cut the chain to the correct size using the guides shown on Park Tool website.

yes- straight out of packet. Ok, just wanted to know if it was common to have to do that. Will take a link out. Cheers

take out the correct number of links so that it fits properly - follow the Park Tools guide.
