Multple chain snaps

I posted a new topic almost 2 months ago about a chain snap. The chain was about 6-7 years old and snapped all of sudden one day after a period of poor shifting.
I purchased a new chain (Shimano HG93), shifting problems persisted even after adjusting the derailleur variables. I realised the chain ws too long and therefore, removed a few links to reset. (I hear this is a bad thing to do)
Despite the right chain length, shifting problems remained and the chain snapped. (I believe I didn't do a good job of installing the links this time round) As a result, I had to connect links from old chain to repair.
Finally the shifting problems seam to have been solved; the gearing alot smoother and no slipping.
However a couple of days ago, the chain snapped again. It seems it's mostly down to the fact putting chains together is not a good thing to do.
The derailleur hanger doesn't look straight so I was curious whether this could be part of the problem?
The derailluer is 7 years old so I'm not sure if the problem rests with the deterioration of the pulleys and derailleur mechanism?
The rear cassette is campagnolo and the shifters, derailleur and chain are shimano. Is this part of the problem?

Don't take this wrong but part of the problem could be installer error(you). Fitting pins in chains MUST be done properly and with the proper tool. Don't use parts from some old chain you have hanging around. Use a whole new chain, don't use pins at all, use master links.0

As dennisn says, these are the best way to join chains, means you can remove easily for cleaning as well.

No offence taken, I totlly agree with you. The first attempt was a chain pin connector, but due to incorrect chain length, I was forced to make further attempts with norml links (extremely difficult).
I think I will have to purchase a new chain, powerlink as you said, and perhaps a new rear derailleur and hanger.0 -

You may not need a new rear D or a new hanger. It could be a bent hanger. These can sometimes be bent back but you need a special tool and that's pretty much an LBS thing, but it shouldn't cost much to have them check it. It's an easy job. The tool(Park) to do this with cost 50 or 60 USD. I bought one a while back(when my wife wasn't looking) and it gets it's fair share of use by more than a few people because I let it be known that I had one. I know, what the h*ll was I thinking.0 -
No-one suggesting new cassette after he's just replaced a 7 year old chain? Think I'd take the bike into LBS and get them to have a good look as you're using a Campag/Shimano mix. Didn't think that worked so get an expert's view before you buy anything else0
