    I had a similar amount.

I really wanted a Bianchi nirone with campag gears. There are none.

I ended up buying a Specialized Allez Elite. A little bit of a dull choice, but in the week I've had it I've enjoyed riding it.

If it's your first road bike then my advice is to go for good second-hand one that originally retailed for up to £2000 when new.
  • For your money the Bianchi alu nurone7 is a good bike and comes within your budget if speced with sora, its a good starting point. If your in the Lincolnshire area try Ettridges Cycles in Grimsby and ask for Steve . Small shop with Good advice. :D

Giant Defy or one of the older Alu models second hand e.g. ocr, scr

Giant make great entry level bikes, spending more is a risk when you dont really know if your going to make good use of the bike

someonebody was selling a 2008 scr 1.5 the other day for a good price imo (i have one), i'd have been interested in that and then with the money i'd saved, purchased some better wheels. and you'd still have plenty of change from 750quid

2 years ago I was in the same position as you and went for a Trek 1.5 as the sportive position was a bit more comfy than a 'full on' race position. It still makes a great winter bike, but be warned, it did lead to a Madone! I tried Specialised and Giant alternatives and they were good too. I'd echo BB's comments re using a good shop. They'll give you sound advice on what would suit you (although they'll only sell a limited range themselves) and become invaluable for servicing and upgrade advice. Make sure you get some extras thrown in, bottles, tools etc. The Boardman bikes get a great review and I've ridden one of the higher end ones which was good but if you do buy one take it straight to a proper bike shop to get it set up properly!

See if you can find a used Planet X SL carbon, they provide amazing value for money and are a cracking bike. Do believe the hype.

I recently went through this and really recommend trying a few out at a good shop. It is surprising how different the bikes can feel (even supposedly when same frame size). If you get one that doesn't feel comfortable you will probably end up getting frustrated.
