With SPD. That, is the question?

Is there a noticable improvement in the red's, or is it personal preference?

Not having any float means setting your cleats up with absolute precision, get it wrong and you can do a bit of damage to your knees.

Do you mean SPDs or other clipless pedals. As far as i understand it Shimano's SPDs have float built into the pedal and its adjusted on pedal. Where as other clipless pedals such as LOOK Keo's have the float difference biult into the cleats: Black 0, Grey 4.5 and Red 9.

If it's the second option your on about then I would suggest getting some of the grey cleats (4.5 degrees of float) and see how it feels, if you decide you want more you can always move up to a pair of red ones.
