My bike a Giant aluminium road bike which has a carbon seatpost fitted with an aluminium shim recently started to creak, as i was certain it was coming from the seatpost area of the bike i took the seatpost, shim and seatpost clamp off the bike degreased and regreased the same then reassembled, but the creaking sound is still there, its is worse whenever i am going up hills and remain seated, but if i get out of the saddle silence, any help please

my alu framed Giant FCR2 creaks and ive found its actually the seat but i,ll just put up with the noise until i get a new seat, but it helps to keep the seatpost and shim clean.

Did you grease inside and outside of the shim?

    It could be anything.
I had a creak on my Kuota and it only creaked out of the saddle, it turned out to be the seatpost surprisingly.
Check the normal stuff like crank boltd, chainring bolts, headset, bars, stem and wheels. Also try the saddle clamp on the seatpost

Could be saddle rails where they are mounted to the seatpost or where they run in the saddle itself.

saddle rails or the seatpost clamp, also the seatclamp round the frame.
  • +1 for BB.

My bike was creaking recently, thought it was the seat post... it was the BB.
Serviced and tightened, now quiet as a mouse!

I seem to recall some creaking on my Giant SCR2.0 that I was convinced was coming from the seat post or BB area, but was infact coming from the gear or brake cables where they curved round the headtube. Weird, but true.

I did of course have the infamous Giant creaking seatpost as well.

    Thanks to you all.
Can you buy a seatpost shim to fit which is not a Giant branded one?

My titanium frame with carbon seatpost creaked like hell, a few sprays of cheap hairspray on the seatpost silenced it immediately...why, I don't know.

Probably worth a try before time and money's spent taking it apart and fitting new parts

If i am to apply hairspray do i need to apply it between the seatpost shim and bike frame, and between the post and shim as well?

Hairspray fixed the creak on my carbon post/carbon frame Spesh Roub :)

Since bought a sachet of Richey carbon assembly paste from CRC to try next time it does it or next time I have the seatpost out for any reason.

Yeah, and the cheaper the better IMO try Bristow's or Silvrikin, even Elnette, or any old- school hairspray provided it's aerosol.

Can't see in your postings, but have you used the high friction grease you'd normally use on carbon post in a carbon frame? Not suggesting you need it nornally, in an Al frame, but If the post is slightly eccentric it might be enough to fill any minscule gap that might be causing the creak. Another possible idea would be to wrap the post in a single layer of aluminium foil. That'll add 100microns to the diameter of the tube, which agsain, might be enough.

If it IS the seatpost!!! I've had a couple of bikes with strange creaks, both of which were the seatpost.
