9sp chain+cassette with XTR M950 8-sp

Hi,
I have a full 1996 XTR M950 8speed group (early pre-mega9 group) but I can't find spare 8sp cassette and chain at a decent price. Will it work with a 9sp chain and cassette ? If so do i just need to change the shifter?

yes the shifter will need to be changed,

sram do some good 8spd cassettes and chains.

Actually, that might be simpler!! Not used SRAM stuff since the fantastically useless gripshift 9.0 but why not. Cheers Nick.
