More Chain & cassette problems

I snapped my original chain on my 09 Rockhopper, bought an SRAM PC 951 to replace it, but it slips under load on the old cassette. Replaced the old chain and no slipping but it's breaking up (loads of links cracked).
I thought the SRAM chain would be compatible with the old cassette, assuming it was and the cassette is u/s I now need to replace it. I estimate I've done a couple of thousand miles on the old setup.
Can anyone recommend? I was looking at the SRAM PG970 or the Shimano Deore HG50, similar prices. Can't say I'd benefit from anything more exotic unless there's significant benefit from upgrading?

Give us chance! Like more than 2 hours ;-)

The problem was you should have changed the cassette and chain at the same time - they are compatible, but worn parts do not mix. Check your chainrings too.

More money buys you a lighter cassette, but not necessarily a longer lasting one. I use PG970, decent weight for the price anyway.
  • Cheers SS, I'll go for PG970 then. It's currently a 34T, the options of CRC give a 34T or 32T. My fitness is a lot better than when I started 18 months ago, so I'm agonising whether I should drop to a 32T. Would this give closer spaced gears through the range or just a higher lowest gear (if you get my meaning)? How would you decide?

If the chainrings are worn it's likely to be the middle ring as that's what I use 90% of the time. Is it possible (or recommended) to replace individual rings or use it as an excuse to upgrade the chainset?
(thinking of how I should play this to the Chief Financial Officer! )

I'll try to be more patient in future
