i have bought a old racing bike and it has single pivort brakes (old style). the problem i am having is that on the brake cable side of the brake the block sits on the rim. how can i get both blocks the same distance away from the rim. the block on the other side has to much room, so i am guessing it's the pivort? does anyone know how to sort em out???

You can try re-centring the brake by loosening the securing bolt, centring the caliper and re-tightening. Some brakes also have a small grub-screw on the arm which you can change the tension in the spring - less common on older brakes.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
