I have followed the carbon clincher thread with interest. I just wonder if I have read it correctly.....are there deep section wheels available in non carbon materials ?

Yes - lots. By "carbon clincher" people mean a full carbon rim, including the braking surface.

There are then deep section clinchers with alloy rims, which may or may not have carbon fairing (but the key point being carbon is not the brake track and does not have the job of holding the tyre bead in place, and therefore the heat dissipation and braking performance issues do not arise). These include:

    Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL
    Mavic SLR
    Shimano DA7850 CL-50
    SRAM (various)
    Zipp 303/404/808
    Flashpoint something or other
    Bontrager something or other

None are particularly light ... 1700g is about the benchmark.

Christ, looking at that list I wouldn't really want any of them ... but if it was my money I'd go for the Mavics or maybe the Shimanos if I rode Shimano/SRAM.
  • Mavic Cosmic Elites are aluminium alloy.1900g though! They are well reviewed!

Mavic CXP too - not very deep mind you - but strong wheel.

There are a number of deep section rims available for building, including the Velocity Deep V ( 30 mm deep, 500g) and the HPlusSon SL42 (42mm deep and 615g) - I've just built up a set of the latter, heavy but nice
