Hi

I have been wanting a single speed for ages but dont want to spend more than about £350.

I have been having problems finding a small framed second hand bike as Im 5ft 7".

I believe my best bets are the following: -

> By a cheap bike of Gumtree and get it converted for £40 - suffer the 'basic' forks that is comes with as I just want it for a training bike or...
> Buy a small frame and then another bike off Gumtree and swap the parts over as I cant seem to find a small bike with what I want.

I keep reading good things about the on one inbred frame and its only £150 i believe.

That would still leave money for your donor bike
  • newbie question, but why would you want a single speed mountain bike?!?

Single speed, for simplicity, zero maintenance, plus builds strength and stamina.

On Ones are good, but I bet you will enbd up paying a lot more than £350,if sourcing all the bits new, once built even of you go for rigid forks and v brakes.

Look at the frame cost then, look at a cheap Deore chainset from the likes of Merlin, but it`s the bits like headset, cables ,tyres, and finishing kit that add up.

However its worth a search of the singletrack world classifieds to see if any one has a complte secondhand bike.

Best bet would probably be to source a complete bike and convert it,if you want to brng this in on budget.

  • i wanted the same as you but on a lesser budget - my spec was:
18" 1997 Kona Hahanna Frame £21 from fleabay
Kona P2's £47 2nd hand but unused from classifieds on here
    M:Sport headset £9 fleabay
    Kona Stem £10 fleabay
    Easton EA30 bars £17 Merlin
    Kalloy Seatpost £9 Wiggle
Wellgo V-8 copy pedals £10 Wiggle
    Carrera Saddle (free with wheels)
Alex rims with sealed hubs from a Carrera £30 from classifieds on here
    Alivio Cranks and BB £30
SS conversion kit Superstar Components £20
    SS specific ring £20 LBS
    SS chain £7 CRC
Deore-Vs (came with my deore gruppo from Merlin for my on-one) assume £20
    Grips £5
    Halo tyres£30
=£265 or £285 if you add the cost of V's.

Getting a SS inbred frame would save a £10 on a tensioner and you dont need a SS specific chainring saving £20 so you could prob build one for £350 with a new/2nds mix
