I have got a 2004 Gary Fisher Marlin Disc - this one

http://www.fisherbikes.com/bike/archivemodel/47

I got it used a few months ago for £250, it has been serviced by my LBS, given a clean bill of health and has basically hardly been ridden in its life, up until my ownership.

It goes very well, stops well, etc, and I am really getting back into MTB after 15 years away. so.....

What I am thinking is this - how good is the frame (seems decent to me but I am no expert) - in other words, will it be worth up-speccing the bike component wise (changing everything in time really) - is the frame good enough to merit this approach, or would I be better plumping for a new bike? (thinking Cube LTD Race, orange something, kona something etc). I think the fork is really poor on mine.

All thoughts appreciated.

Chris

either get something like a RS tora to replace your fork, or if you have £500+ to spend on a new bike, get one. pauls cycles have some good deals on 08 and 09 konas
  • cheers for that. Which Tora model might be good? I am a bit bewildered by the choices available as last time I was seriously into this was almost 15-20 years ago lol

Tora 318 air, £150 at Merlin.

Other than that just fit new tyres and that is all I would do! Save the money until parts wear out..
  • thanks very much. So can pretty much any fork go on any bike (possible stoopid question alert)?

And why do you say tyres in particular?

Any fork with disc mounts (though you may need adapters in this case) and 80-100mm of travel with a threadless 28.6mm steerer. Which the Tora has - though it is 120mm travel and can be changed internally.

Original fitted tyres tend to be wire beaded and heavy - a kevlar beaded tyre will save a lot of weight for not much money.
  • cool, thanks very much.

Can my bike not have 120mm travel fork on it then?
I have seen a tora uturn coil which can have the travel externally adjusted too...

120mm may be a bit too much and change the handling negatively.

The 318 is the best tora - the 302 has a simpler damping system. Uturn can be had for both.
  • right, thanks.

Will investigate. Seems the better option that changing the bike for the moment anyway.
