BASHGUARD SIZING

Hey 
I'm currently running 22-32-44 setup on my chainring but I'm looking to ditch the top ring and get a bashring. I quite fancy upping the middle ring to 34 or 36, sooo would a 22-36 setup work? And am I right in saying that the bashring sizing I need is based on the ring I am looking to protect i.e 36t (if I buy a 36t ring of course!). If it helps I'm using a Race Face Evolve XC Chainset for XC duties and downhilly bits.
