Mavic Cosmic Elite Wheel....Spacer needed or not?
Got some new Mavic Cosmic Elite wheels (Shimano M10). I have swapped the 105 (10spd) cassette from the old Bontrager Race wheel and there was a spacer on that hub. In the Mavic 'manual' it says to use the spacer for Shimano cassette's, which I have done. (It says spacer not required for SRAM)
On fitting/trying the the wheel and without adjusting anthing I now find I can't get into the largest sprocket, the rear derailleur is hitting the 'stop'.
Before I go adjusting things, I just want to double check whether that the Mavic spacer is really required for 10spd cassettes. The Mavic 'manual'/website is next to useless regarding infomation.
Can post some pics if needed.
Many thanks.

I think you need mavic spacer + shimano for 10 spd on mavic wheels.0

Mavic Aksiums, Ksyriums & Cosmics have the Mavic M10 hub (unless they're Campag fit, when they have an ED10).
This M10 hub is not a Shimano hub, it's a Mavic hub.
It has the same spline pattern as Shimano & SRAM but it's wider than a Shimano hub because Mavic also sell a wider Campag-spaced cassette which fits it, allowing you to use it on a Campag bike.
Thus to run Shimano or SRAM on it, you need a Mavic spacer, which is ca 3mm thick and has three notches in it (doesn't matter which way round these notches face, just fit on hub before the cassette - really old Shimano cassettes used to have three protruding rivets but no longer)
If running Shimano 8sp or 9sp, this is all you need, but if running Shimano 10sp, you *also* need a 10sp spacer
- a Shimano 10sp cassette is actually narrower than an 8 or 9sp cassette, so to run one on a Shimano 8/9/10sp hub you need a thinner spacer, ca 1.5mm, which comes with the cassette.
- so if running on the Mavic M10 hub, you need the Mavic thicker spacer because you're running Shimano on the M10 hub, *plus* the thinner Shimano spacer because it's 10sp.
Some people have said that with a SRAM 10sp cassette, you can get away with just the Mavic spacer : dunno, not tried it myself.0 -
Wow! Now that was what I call an answer.
Thanks a lot to you both. Especially to andy-wrx for explaining it too.
Now fitted both spacers to hub and now works like it should.
Thanks again.0 -
Hi Zexel
sorry to bring up and old topic, but how do you find the wheels agains the Bontrager Race.
i am looking at a pair of the mavic's but not convinced there will be much diffrence to the Bontrager?
Thanks for any help

No Probs.
Actually not much difference at all. I liked the Bonty Race's. The actual weight is about the same for both.
The Mavic's are a nice strong and smooth wheel if a little on the heavier side. Nice and stiff, although I don't think I ride fast enough to gain anything from the aero of the Mavic's. Still straight and true. (I'm 88kg)
My only gripe is that a couple of the bladed spokes on the rear have rotated slightly, no biggy really.
But yeah, am happy with the Mavic's although if I hadn't had to change Bonty's I don't think there is much (if anything) to gain with the Mavic's.
I have just changed the stock wheels on my Marin MTB to some "PRO-LITE Allien" and the difference was, 'Wow!'. Now thinking of getting some PRO-LITE for the road bike now as 'spare' set , just have to find a way of getting them sent to the house without the wife seeing!
Hope that's helped.0 -
