1 - do any companies sell complete 4X specific bikes (rather than multipurpose 4X / trail / jump bikes) - i can think of the commencal maxmax but any others ?

2 - what do we think is a reasonable all-up weight for a strong enough hardtail 4X bike ?

    Identiti.

depends on how often you want to be replacing parts.

    i want a 4x hard tail badly.

last months mbuk had a 4x jumpy bike group test in it, there was a mondraker, kona, giant and a saracen, i think the giant won, it was an stp1 i think

yeah - the obvious choice frame-wise in some ways (i already have a mr hyde all-rounder) but as far as i can see they dont offer the krisis or dr jekyll ass full builds

true enough - im thinking 28-30lbs seems a reasonable weight ?

if i build a 'proper' 4X bike ill spec it all myself - just curious about how companies would spec a purpose-made 4X bike for the market

you could always build up your own bike- identiti krisis, RS pikes u turn, 1x9 gears etc.

yeah - thats my intention medium term

just curious as to what (if anything) the market thought a 4X build looked like commercially

alternate tack then - anyone got any links (other than the atherton commencal ti superbike) as to the specs decent 4X riders run ?

the new fox 831(i think) are 4x specific so they are used alot now as well as rock shox pike, rock shox reba, fox f100. drivetrain is usally 1x9 setup and quite alot use road bike cassetes with mtb or road rear mechs. wheels are usally hope pro2 built on light but strong rims or xt or other hubs depending on budget and prefrance. the rest of the parts are light to keep the weight down. the stem is short(-50mm). the handle bars are usually quite wide and the seatpost cut down with a light and small saddle e.g a ti railed saddle. brakes are down to prefrance and ran with 160mm rotors front and back or even smaller.

pretty much where my thoughts already are actually

heh - maybe all i really need to do is swap my mr hyde frame for a krisis and add some lighter cranks and im just about there already

sounds a pretty good idea but i would also get one of the mentioned forks and hydraulic brakes as the cable brakes will not cope as well through the many turns etc.

was kidding really - id like to keep the mr hyde as it is as a do-it-all bike (just seems my thoughts on what makes a do anything bike are close to what most people think is a pretty specialist machine) - if i build a 4X specialist machine it will be for the 2011 season to race some fun events and maybe some NPS veterans races for a laugh now im an old man

RAM bikes do a 4x bike, and they have two types, a hardtail and a fullsuser.
But the fullsus is based on the Enduro frame.

Check it out if you like

Bike weight is 14.140kg, frame 2.410kg. (the hardtail)
