im in the process of trying to find a creak on the bike that sounds like its coming from the crank area .Ive removed and regreased the pedals and crank bolts and i have just removed the the chainring bolts .When i replaced them some of them just spin in the funny shaped bolt with slit in ,is there a special tool to hold these so you can tighten the bolt with the hex key or will this be tight enough ? hope you understand what i mean .

You need a tool to hold the back of the bolts -e.g. Park CNW-2:

Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

good timing with this thread. i'm doing mine next weekend and was unaware of this. why can't they just use standard screw/ allen heads on bikes?

Don't forget that some chainrings eg Campag use Torx bolts not allen bolts

You can buy better chainring bolts that are hex on both sides. Lord knows why all chainring bolts aren't double hexed, that slit is an atrocious design and should be outlawed.

Be careful, wrap the chain ring in a thick rag. If your allan key slips your hand will embed itself on the chain ring covering it in blood, children should not hear the words that will then pass your lips
