riding a specialised globe I got for £70 from ebay 8)

have reached the stage where me and some mates have planned a ride to Southend and am also looking at doing a ride around the city over the weekend

    and another....

planned to get stuck in to the forum a while ago and then (for reasons too boring to mention) had no internet access at work. But thankfully just got it back and the days can drag a bit less (when they are not beasting me that is!).

Anyway - commuting from Teddington to the city since May last year - everyday unless post work sherbets go beyond the 3 pint/10pm limit. Love it - total addict. Spit tacks when I have to get the train.

Normally on grey Pearson touche running SS 48/16. Maybe cervelo RS when the weather is v good or 08 Spesh rockhopper pro in the snow/ice. Chevron messenger bag and 3/4 baggy overshorts. Love the SCR - and do ok but there are a couple of guys I see regularly who are just a sonic-boom accompanied blur...anyone on here I wonder...

Good day yesterday - saw 31.7mph new top speed on the SS. However, computer has logged 78.6mph as my max speed. I totally trust the technology obviously!

Hope to see some of you guy on the road

    Hello everyone

Been lurking a while. Just bought a roadie for a 22 mile round trip commute. Just waiting for my lock & lights to turn up (start work at 6am). Nice to see the weather has changed

The pain shall commence from next week. Not to much I hope as I'm a runner too.

Oh my word. You start work at 6am, and you've got an 11 mile commute... what time do you get out of bed?

    Kudos to you...
 Some sort of in-built protection filter stopped me seeing the bit about the 6am start on the first read.

I reckon up at 4am up to start with. I'll have virtually no traffic to worry about on the way in however coming home will be different matter altogether.
i'm using this week to get used to the bike as I havent been on a road bike for 20 years. I rode it home from the shop 9.5miles in 45mins in the wet. Slow but I had to take it easy and at least I didnt have to get off for the hills :) oh and I got to over take a commuter.

Its a shame I wont have other commuters to race against, Even when I drive in I just see the odd MTB with no lights/dark clothing I dont get how people dont think their lives arent worth £40 for a set of lights but thats a hole other thread and i'm rambling.

Mainly a lurker here also! Hi.

Been a cyclist all my years, been commuting for 1 & 1/2 yrs everyday I'm at work, 5 or 6 and often 7 days a week in all weathers, have only not cycled to work twice in that time.

My commute starts in Portrush (NI) and ends in Coleraine and is exactly 5.03 miles door to door each way. Normally takes me around 20ish mins each way depending what way the wind is blowing, today being the exception, going in this morning took 14 mins 31 sec, a PB on my commuting bike with an extreme wind and a 38.5 mph top speed! Normally don't see any other cyclists on my commute, in the morning anyway, lots of wildlife though, foxs, field mice, occasional roadkill and drunken idiots making their way home home that often have to be dodged.

Bikes include: COMMUTER - Subway 2, with mudguards and fully upgraded everything as original components died after 4 months, weighs a ton but serves me well.

MTB - Hardtail Kona Hoss Deluxe built up myself with sram XO, reba sl forks and other nice carbon bits.

ROAD - Giant Defy 3 2010 - which I'm in the process of upgrading to Ultegra everything, just shifters to go, and a set of RS80 wheels ordered today from Merlin. Must stop this upgrading business! But its like an addiction!

    Hi Phil

i do exactly the same route 5 days a week - never see a soul!!
Was gutted yesterday as i had to drive and missed that tailwind!!

i commute on Focus Maleta in the grime and a Kona Haole in the sun (not that often)

    errr.. Hi,

I've only just joined but I've been lurking for quite a while.

It was this weekend last year that I drunkenly volunteered to do a charity cycle ride, It was only 60 miles but at the time I thought it was an impossible distance. Bought a Trek road bike, joined the local cycle club (who are great BTW) and I'm having a great time. Plus I'm a lot fitter than I ever was.

No commuting for me as I work from home, but that does mean I can sneak out for a lunchtime ride.

Now that I've said hello I'll try and post more often

Edit: Just noticed that this is the commuting forum (I came from the front page)... I'll get me coat.

I lurk alot, I prefer reading posts to making them. I have been commuting by bike for 4 years but only discovered this forum 1 year ago. Originally the commute was by 1k mtb as I had no car and went mtbing as much as possible (xc). Now my stable has grown to include full suss mtb, road bike, single speed and cx bike. I already know what I want to upgrade and replace for all of these just cant afford it. I want a Ti frame for my HT mtb (charge duster?) I am thinking of getting rid of the FS and possibly replacing it with a more xc orientated FS. I have had thoughts of ditching the SS for a dutch type bike to take over as the pub bike. The CX is my commuting steed but I hate it's brakes and really like the look of roasties Ti disc braked, commuter cx type bike. Would be perfect as I have a secure place to leave the bike. The road bike needs a shorter stem so it fits better and I want a more racey carbon one as I am starting racing now. Eyes on the Scott addict R2 as it looks fast and I love the black and red colour scheme. The Bianchi infinito has also caught my eye and the Orbea opal. After aquiring this steed Iv really gotta sort out my n+1 addiction!

My commutes vary in length im on a relief rota so can potentially be sent to any station in London. Normally they are kind and dont tend to send me more than 10. The closest is jusr 2.5 miles. I have rotational shifts so sometimes I am stating at 6am, sometimes 12am and sometimes 6pm returning approx 12-14 hrs later. So sometimes I see hardly anyone and sometimes I am surrounded by other cyclists.

  • I'm a long time lurker; I've been reading the commuting forum for about 18 months now. This post prompted me to sign-up. :D

I commute in central Manchester to 2 different sites. Distance is either 2.5 miles (each way) or about 5 miles (each way). I also do some weekend rides in the summer of usually about 20 miles.

I ride a Dahon Jack that I have modded a bit with SKS full mudguards (for the lovely Manchester weather) and BBB bar ends for some alternative hand positions. I want a road bike but don't have space, unless I get rid of my girlfriend...

I'll try and join in a bit now that I've made the effort to join.

  • I'm mostly a lurker though have posted occasionally. I'm riding a MTB with knobblies, Deptford to Holborn so about 6 miles. been commuting pretty much daily since last September...love it. its only the ice (not snow) that stops me cycling, and a knee injury at the end of Feb meant I had 2 weeks off the bike. knee is still not right so go easy on me as you scalp me...the slowness isn't by choice but it beats the train/tube combination any day

    Hi Antlaff

I've seen seen you on your fine white steed, just haven't been cycling at the time otherwise I'd have tipped my helmet to you. Hello anyway! (tips helmet)

The tailwind was awesome , coming home was a bugger though!

LIT - I also start at 6am everyday, sometimes 5am, so its either a 4:15 or 3:15 alarm call for me, grim in winter not so bad coming into this time of year.

I too am a long term lurker.

Since August last year I've been doing the 20 mile round trip from Wandsworth to Wembley, usually 4 or 5 days a week. Not much SCR action on that route which is a bit of a shame.

Started off as a MTB commuter and then progressed to a Giant SCR 3.0 roadie which I love and has significantly cut my journey time.

I've now caught the roadie bug (helped by reading this forum) and don the lycra most weekends for trips to Surrey Hills or Richmond Park on my new Cervelo RS. My new hobby has cost me a small fortune and forced me to lose 2 stone, I love it...

You're nucking futs you are... :P

I used to get up at 4am for swimming, that was only 4 days a week and I still hated it.

Funny, people have shouted that at me from passing cars, usually when its snowing!

Kinda used to the early starts now, and i only sleep 4-5 hrs max anyway, also it means I always have the afternoons free for cycling for fun, and enjoying the sun when it eventually shows its beaming face.

  • Semi-lurker here...

Been fairweather commuting for about 9 months now. Hoping to purchase a Giant Defy 2 tomorrow for when the weather improves and add the bits(mudguards) to make my hybrid more weather proof :?

Commute 17.5 miles each way from The Chalfonts to Staines and want to be doing this 5 days a week in the summer.

Have yet to have any SCR, everyone I see is either higher FCN or turns off before I get the chance to catch them (or they are faster than me  )

Am on the SCS board and aiming to do 5k miles this year. At the moment just looking at the competition around my mileage, so staying ahead of TailwindHome(thought Wheezy had deleted himself as could not find him earlier) and need to catch and pass Holybinch which should move me up the table nicely as he seems to be ascending it well.

Am doing the Wiggle New Forest Standard and L2B and can see 5 or 6 more spotives being entered as well(just wish there were more on a Saturday).

As this is my 2nd hobby after golf, I do not get a lot of time for weekend rides although this has become my most expensive hobby and I have a Wiggle habit!

Another mostly-lurker here (you guys are indeed the most entertaining thing on this forum ;)) -- hello!

I commute in Birmingham, 4 miles each way, every day -- coming up to my second year now. I've barely missed a day because whatever the weather is like, the alternative is the bus or the car; the former takes forever, and I just don't like driving at all.

I am a mountain biker at heart, which is mainly Mr Satu's fault. Until recently, I was mostly commuting on my big old heavy Specialized Hardrock with monster tyres (fantastic in the snow, but such hard work in everything else...), but I've now got a Kona Dew Drop called Dewey[1]. We'll be riding Land's End to John o'Groats this summer[2], which is what I bought it for, but it's actually lovely to commute on, too. I have 2 more bikes apart from that -- a FS trail bike and a road bike that's now being neglected in favour of Dewey. N+1 is alive and well here.

Hello all, i am a lurker and a noob.

i am wanting to commute to work now as petrol prices are getting higher and i want to get fit again. i've been on this site for a week now just looking around for tips and dietry advice but still not sure on some things

i ride a 1999 marin shoreline trail full suss with big nobbly tyres which for road riding isnt ideal but its all i have really.

My commute would be 16miles each way but i am not feeling confident enough at the minute to actually bite the bullet and do it. i have only done the odd 10 mile ride in the past couple of years but not regular. i used to be on my bike everyday whatever the weather when i was younger but like most people i got a driving license and the biking went out the window.

i am looking for encourangement to commute and advice on what equipment i need to purchase as i have nothing apart from a camelbak, tools and waterproof jacket.
