I've made up my mind that the next bike I'm going to build is going to be fully DH orientated.
I fancy building something that will be eye-catching as well as functional
So I've some thoughts on a frame
Cove Shocker
Evil Revolt
Coupled with
BOS idyll front shocks

The rest of the build could be crank bros wheel set, Formula the One brakes
but I'm still looking at parts combinations

Appreciate any in put as I'm not familar with DH componentry

Currently throwing around sworks Enduro
I'm going to blow the bank on a new build ( within reason ) NOW DONE!!

    Budget smudget :)

No not really but I'm sure it could be under the off the shelf price of most standard reasonablly/very capable DH bikes ....I'm Thinking V10, Demo 8 etc

    OK Then let's see....

    Frames

    Santa Cruz V10
    Trek Session 10
    Orange 224
    Commencal Supreme DH
    Giant Glory DH

There's not really many fork options....Fox 40 RC2 / RS Boxxers WC / Marz 888. Or some one the new BOS forks?

Saint cranks. Saint Rear mech/shifter/cassette. Avid Elexir R, Formula The One or Saint brakes. Sunline V1 Bars and Stem. Then saddle, grips etc. is personal choice.

There is soooo much to choose from but that's the kind of DH bike i'd have :D

EDIT: Forgot wheels - EX729 on Saint or Pro 2 hubs or Halo SAS on Pro 2

'large' I'd guess by the choice of kit so far.

OP: I love my Shocker, I really do, but it's a pretty old design now, came out in '06 and aside from a few little changes which are pretty much limited to boxing in the front shock mount.

The Evil on the other hand really is at the firery edge of design. I'd go for one of those.

Those BOS forks look great, but they're very rare/unusual do you have anyone local who can service them, or do you plan to do it yourself? Because DH needs more TLC than other MTB stuff, everything takes such a battering.

    I run:
2008 888 RC3 WC's, I especially use '08's are later ones had appaling reviews but mine got 9 or 10 out of 10.
X9 shifter and X9 supershort cage derailer.
    Hope Tech V2 brakes
Charge Spoon seat (cheap, light, narrow)
Saint Chainset (bombproof), Saint/SLX Cassett (cheap) PC971 Chain (cheap)
Raceface Evolve DH Bars, Riser, Seat post (cheaper than Diablos stuff and hardly any different.
Wheels I run custom build 729's on Pro2 - £250 built, so much cheaper than very high-end purpose built DH wheelsets like Demax's etc, weigh more, but that helps with stability when you're a noob and destroying a rim means £100 tops.

TBH I don't race, I don't enjoy it so I stick to uplift days and trips to the alps etc so saving a few grams to shave that 0.01 seconds from a race run isn't important to me

Right we seem to be heading in the right direction, but I would like to move away from the obvious frame choices V10, 88, 8 etc
The reason is I'd like something that bit different
The Shocker seems like a contender in that it ain't changed much so why fix it so even though it is an old design I 'd believe its probably fit for purpose still
There was a couple of other points it is most likely It won't be raced but be used as a fun /uplift bike
Frames such as Last Herb have crossed the radar as has Sunn frames

Everyone seems to think Saint so that could be a given as crank set /rear deralleur
    Keep it coming

If you want more 'exotic' frames...

    Foes DHS
Nicolai (not sure about the model)
    Empire AP-1
    Sunn Factory DH

    Can't think of more...

If you're not going to race, Shocker all the way! Just bear in mind I bent my gear hanger last year in Morzine................. that's be £60 sir. Waiting for a quote from Cove for a new lower linkage because I'm a plum and fiited my chain device wrong and damaged it. Dickhead

People are forever asking me about it when I'm at Cwmcarn.

Yeah Saint Chainset FTW, my mate runs Saint derailer/shifter it's good no doubt. I would have probably had one myself, but 1) They were brand new when I built mine and not easily available 2) I'm a SRAM man - but if my derailer and shifter were both broken at the same time I'd probably make the switch.

Nice frame selection there Boys. The Corsair looks interesting. It will keep me going for a couple of days to do the background reading, But it looks likely that the price that I've seen on the shocker frames might just clinch it so far.

It sounds like you've got your heart set on something by a smaller, more niche manufacturer. I'd look at the Evil Revolt, Intense 951 or Mondraker Summum.

You need to post photos once it's built up - sounds like it's going to be a pretty sweet build...

After spending today looking through the possible choices this is lop of the list for price, looks and no- one has managed to come up with a bad review. So once I'm back in a couple of weeks I should have a frame

    This was my last build
    P6044089.jpg

The next choice is the Forks
My initial thought was to go for exotica like the BOS stuff but there seems to be good reason to go down the Fox 40 etc route so that spares and servicing aren't going to be issues

if you've got the cash for it why not get the BOS, i'd imagine TFtuned will be handling everything as they've been doing the bos upgrades to 40's for a while now.

I'd say 40's or Boxxers. Foxes need servicing/maintenance alot more, but apparently are smoother. It'd be Boxxers for me :)

i have to say boxxers are the best if your riding regualary as 40s are race forks meaning they will require services more often if riding regulary
