A classic example of why you should never put panniers on a pedal cycle (unless you're doing a round the world trip perhaps).

Agreed. How far is the commute in question?

21 kms one way. OK, I used to be a Boy Scout :P .

I happen to live in a very bicycle unfriendly country, where traffic is mainly lorries, cars and scooters/ step throughs. Calling for help is (almost) out of the question since anyone wanting to come get me with a car would be stuck in the horrendous traffic themselves for close on to an hour, so self sufficiency is the key. Taxis refuse to carry a bicycle, or will demand a lot extra. You are not allowed to carry a bicycle onto a bus or train here, even a folding one. So if I have a mechanical, I need to be able to fix it and get going or be prepared for a long walk.

The panniers were put on as I started getting fitter. I use the extra weight as a training aid. Makes riding the Sunday best bike a breeze. :):):)
