Hu,

Looking to make the upgrade to an XT chainset over the course of the next month or so.

I currently have a SRAM X9 on the bike but although it is generally OK I'm not taht impressed. There is always something not quite right with it.

As such I'm looking at the XT gear for here as well. I would also need to change the changet at the front

Quick look on CRC and the Shimano website and there seems to be different models (Shadow, Rapid Rise, GS, SGS). Tried to find out about the differences and seubsequent pro's and con's but struggling. Can anyone help??

We have a bit in the FAQ on the difference in cage length.

Rapid Rise reverses the spring, so the shifter paddles will work opposite way round.

Shadow is a low profile design for better obstacle clearance and less rattle.

With a triple chainset you will need a long cage.

yes you will need to change the shifter.

    Looked on shimanos webby?

    GS SGS is cage length.

Oh and changing to shimano will not fix any poor set up.

I did look on the Shimano website and couldn't really follow the differences.

    Thanks for the updates,

Appreciate the basis of a poor setup, however have fitted endless setups to other bikes (predominantly Shimano) and had some help from the LBS on putting the SRAM together. It just seems to clog easy and won't clear itself. I've had enough of it really and irrespective of teh rights and wrongs between SRAM and Shimano, I've never really had any issues with Shimano so better the devil you know!
