Does your Tricross/Singlecross still have cr@p brakes ?

After two years of ownership I have finally sorted mine. Tried different pad compounds, travel agent, removing cross levers and fitted cantis. All of which have been unsuccessful.

The answer !

Fit new 105 cableset which cost me £6 and fit Avid Single Digit 7 V's £40 set incl front and rear.( I'm sure any cableset will do, just OE ones are cheap junk that don't work !)

Result.......Awesome :D .

No messing with the centre adjustment every ride like the originals and finally brakes that will outbrake any dual pivot brake  .

My Singlecross came with 'V's and other than noise they are very good. Now fitted Koolstop Salmon pads and even better and quieter. The only problem was the lack of a brake adjuster. A set of in-line ones cured that. Cost so far about £15.
  • Mine came with V's also, they were terrible. no matter how much I adjusted the centring screws they would rub the rim after a couple of brake applications.

Mine felt terribly wooden is if I had ice cubes for brake blocks and the cables had so much frictional resistance it really didn't help matters.

Perhaps mine was a Friday afternoon build, least I didn't pay anywhere near full price.

Never experienced the highly publicised brake judder that some have suffered

The brake judder was with cantis. Fork flex caused the cable to tighten pulling the brake on harder. Vs are not affected the same.
  • Hi karlmoreton,

I'm also having braking issues on my Singlecross, which came with Tektro v-brakes. I don't think they are mini-Vs though, they seem full-size to me. The only viable option seems to be a medium-wide canti (e.g. Tektro CR720) plus good pads plus a cable hanger.

Are you saying that Avid SD7s work great
    - with the factory tektro levers,
    - without removing the suicide/cx brake levers,
    - without adding a travel agent?

In other words, is the SD7 is so different from other standard-length v-brakes that it needs about half the pull length?

What is your rim-pad clearance with this setup?

    Many thanks for your reply!

  • I did have brake judder with V brakes, poor pad compound and flexy fork, not to the same extent as cantis but there was definitely judder.

Although the avids are same length as the standard V's, they are more rigid and seem to be capable of running more rim clearance as well as being much more positive.

Also the centring screws maintain their position on the avids, probably due to much better quality return springs, rather than having to adjust the screws every ride, another thing that was really frustrating with the standard V's.
