Puncture Problems.......

Good morning all,
At the moment i am having real problems with punctures on a local canal tow path thanks to thorns. I have tried using slime filled tubes but still spend lots of time patching or changing by the canal side. Just wondering if this idea my help to prevent them.
I have a few old inner tubes lying around in the shed. If i was to trim them down and use them as a liner between the inside of the tyre and the inflated tube, would this be useable. I am a bit skint at the moment due to having to buy new tubes thanks to these punctures, so i don't really want to spend more money on the slime tape that would do the same job as a second tube.
Thanks
Andy J
