Hi

I'm currently running a 12-25 but want to change to a 13-29 for a couple of hilly sportives I've naively signed-up for. I figured switching cassette would be cheaper/less hassle than fitting a compact chainset.

The question is; do I need a longer chain and/or a longer cage derailleur (currently have the standard short cage) or will my existing set-up do?

Thanks

    Hi,
I used a 13-29 for the Marmotte a couple of years ago on a short cage rear mech. It worked fine, but obviously at it's limit on the 29. It should be ok on your set up, but if you are looking to use it on a regular basis I would switch to a medium rear mech

    The manual says medium cage.

Hi, I use a 13-29 as well and use a medium cage as a short cage didn't work for me. But I do know people who have used a short cage, so maybe it's worth trying before you buy a medium cage.
    Good luck on your rides.

To answer your other question, yes you are likely to need to lengthen your chain too.

I have experimented with this for the same reasons, I have a chorus 10 speed set up and as long as you don't want to use 53- 29 (big to big rings)short cage is OK plus on the Chorus rear mech there is a screw you can use to adjust the distance from top jockey wheel to cassette which helps
