Pick me a car

My budget is £2500

Would ideally like an estate to get my bikes (and of course bitches) inside.

I was looking at a 3 series BMW on Pistonheads for £2400 with 70'000 miles which is pretty much on the money.

Also ideally a diesel.

Just wondering what else is available in that kind of nick for that sort of money. Obviously Id stretch to a little bit more money if there were some decent cars about.

Im basically just trying to avoid a rep mobile with 150'000miles on it!

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

A 70k BMW for £2400?!! Sounds a bit too low to me...

For that money I'd get a Focus TDCi - you'll get a reasonable one, they go well, they're reliable, they handle well, they are cheap to fix.

Try and get something flashy and it'll be a total nightmare to look after.

Get yourself a mondeo, for that money it will be almost new  but they are very comftable cars and cheap as chips to fix, except the bumpers which for some reason are almost the same price as the car?

At that price getting a BMW/Merc/AUDI or simular you will be asking for trouble and big bills.
oh and the golden rule of buying ANY car dont buy french.

    Cheers or the feedback.

    This: http://pistonheads.com/sales/1484890.htm

Was the one I had noticed. It wouldn't be a huge deal if there was loads wrong with it because my old man owns a car garage. Although having read over that ad again Im now suspect that its either a con or a cat D.

Id stretch to one of these: http://pistonheads.com/sales/1539329.htm for £3000 if it didn't have over 100k on the clock!

I'll have a look at the Focus and Volvos... I might even end up on Mondeos!

That £2500 Beemer is definitely dodgy - that's way too cheap.

Other one looks good but 125k miles is pretty scary.

I've been tempting replacing my skip of a car recently - same requirements; big boot, low fuel consumption, £2500 mark.
Focus 1.6 diesel (as mentioned above  ) is the one car that seems to tick the boxes. Cheap to insure, service, buy and run. Fun to drive, booty room et al.

I've seen some diesel vauxhall vectra estates going up for low money. A mate has one and they're incredibly easy to work on, are so widely used that every common fault has been detailed for you in advance, the spares are cheap as hell.

I am considering selling my car to get one and free up enough cash for new toys.

Astra estates are also grat value for money,

but they are ex sales rep wagons.. but this is a good thing high motorway miles don't put a lot of stress on a motor.. or gearbox/clutch in particular

Pffffttttt whatever (Apart from the Fench part I totally agree...from painful experience) Much trouble free motoring can be had if you are wanting something that is lilkely older but well kitted and not on every street corner.

Personal experience I wanted a 'work horse' of a car so I picked up a 9 year old V6 quattro Audi A6 Avant with a FASH for £2500 (110 miles on the clock) That beast gave me 50K miles getting it serviced by quick fit for oil changes only at £39 a throw and one set of brakes for £180 all up. It never missed a beat. 4 full suspension bikes on the roof plus huge space and a fully loaded interior. Only got rid of it to pick up a shiny new car.

Seeing as the OP's old man has a garage a quality loaded euro will be fine....caveat...research research reasearch....

Why is it too low? You can get E36's for that money.

Edit - Nevermind saw the link thats an E46 which is way too cheap. (you can get E36s with 70k on the clock for that money though :P )

    No problem!

For the record, I think quite a few BMWs are actually a bit cack and most are overpriced

Good luck with the search - if you need a checklist of things to look out for (once you find something suitable) then shout.

No worries. Im currently stuck between a car and a DH bike. Watching videos on YouTube like a total n00b thinking 'How hard can it be?', 'its only 2.5mins of madness' and other stupid things.
