Hi guys in the very near future i am looking into getting my first full sus bike. I dont have lots of money to play with due to my wedding in may. So prob have around 1k to spend and looking to get as good a bike as possible! I may even go down the second had route to insure i get the best bike for my money.
So if you had 1k to spend would you buy new or buy second hand and which bike would you buy?
Cheers

For general trails, moors and cross country? Or something more gravity assisted?
Or you a heavy rider?0 -
I`d be looking at the following:
KHS 604,Boardman Team FS,GT i drive 5 xcr,or 2009 model Giant Trance X5 from Pauls cycles.
These are really the only sub 1k bikes worth considering.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
Wouldn't have a GT if you paid me...the best value if you can get away with an 18" or smaller frame would be a Mongoose Teocali Super from Pauls...Marzocchi XC600 ETA 140mm travel w/ TST ETA control; Alloy Steerer, Crown and 32mm Stanchions, Fox RP23, Full XT including chainset, hubs and brakes, with the finishing kit a mix of easton EA70 and 50
Or for £800 the have the Elite version, again a great spec Marzocchi XC600 TST-2 140mm, Air Spring, Alloy steerer, crown and 32mm stanchions, Fox RP2, Hayes Stroker, and Sram...both bargains...I know I have had one in the past, plus they get great reviews0 -
We need to know what sort of riding you want it for but I might as well chuck in the FSRxc cos I have one and love it! First class 5" trail bike. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
Admit the spesh is a nice bike, but the kit is compromised...for a grand the goose has the spec of a bike that should cost 2k...the frames are great and the "freedrive" system is slick and smooth. Agree depends on what you need it for, a long XC slog or thrashing around a trail centre..you have to admit the value for money the Teocali range gives is a bit of a bargain0

The X5 is £800, they also have the X4 £950 which has a better fork and shock and is nearly 2lbs lighter.0 -
Pudsey...wot sort of riding do u think the Teocali Super is suited too.0

thanks for the advice. I plan on doing xc trails but want to try out most of scotlands bike centers like glentress and have a bike where i can have a bit of everything. I would love to be able to hit jumps and tackle fast downhills aswell as doing some xc.0

I'll be selling my Giant Trance X5 very soon if your interested. Not sure on the price but I've not had it long & it's practically new. I was going to wait until the rebuild is finished. But as it nears completetion (there's light at the end of the tunnel now) I'm thinking I might just sell the Trance early & use the money to buy the remaining parts for the rebuild.0

The Teocali is more addapted to aggresive xc stroke all mountain, it's never going to be a xc racer, but is perfectly at home on loose trail to some of the large technical trail centres. A shade over 5" travel, but the good thing is you can tune the fork and shock to the conditions. It is a very nice piece of kit and not bad looking, so at a grand it represents amazing value....cost up the components in you head...the forks and shock would be £600 plus..XT groupset £350,hubs £80 and brakes £260 etc...and you get the picture

The Teocali or GT XCR sounds ideal.Wouldn't have a GT if you paid me

Just FYI, i built my scott out of mostly used components (frame, forks, wheels and other bits) for about £1k, and it's amazing (frame is for sale - shameless plug)0
-
Also i am 6ft tall so think i would need at least a 19"frame,0

Maybe! I use some 17 at 6ft.0

Good, tough bike. There are lighter options for XC, but not many are well specced at this price. Hell, the frame is worth the asking price!0

i'm in a similar boat and been eyeing up the GT , as currenty got a GT xc1 and been happy with it so far, but really could do with some fs now i think

I went a similar path, Avalanche 1.0 to I-Drive 5 XCR and now I have got used to it I am really impressed. Although a bit heavier than the Avalanche I find climbing, particularly if a bit technical is easier with the added traction and downhill it's amazing. I did Penmachno on it last week in wind and rain and it was superb. It took a while to set up the forks and RP2 Float but now I love it. I hated the saddle though but a Spoon has sorted that weak point out. Wait for one of the GT web offers and you can pick it up for £799 and for that price I think it's a steal, that's what I paid.Vaaru Titanium Sram Red eTap

Depends on what size you are but there's a nearly new Anthem X3 on ebay which I suspect will go for around £650-750. With the extra money saved get a set of Reba's for it and away you go.
I recently bought a nearly new 2010 Anthem X4 for well under £1k and with the money I saved upgraded it to Anthem X1/0 standard.
It's an awesome bit of kit. The frame alone costs almost £1k new so it'll keep it's value really well.0 -
I'd go for a used one - be selective though. How about a Commencal Meta; they are good value.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0
