If you have aero wheels, i.e wheels with deep sides, see example:

Then you will need a long valve so that you can still connect a pump.0 -
The longer ones are intended for deep rim wheels.0

Deep section rims require a long valve.More problems but still living....0

Ah yes, now that makes absolute sense. I think what threw me is that my raleigh came with long valves but doesnt have deep rims, so a little unnecessary. OK thank you all - dilemma solved!!!0

I find the shorter valve's can be a pain even on shallow rims so always use longer valves. No issues then getting pump to catch on head of the valve.0

What he said. Other than looks, I can think of no legitimate reason to have shorter valves.
Unless you consider saving 3g of metal a legitimate reason.0 -
If you're a bit heavy handed when you pump your tyres, a shorter valve will provide less leaverage on the valve joint, so reduceding the likelihood of tearing a hole in your innertube.0

I consider the 3g's to be crucial  :oops:Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!0 -
Which Raleigh did you get?
I have the Avanti U6 Tiagra, and mine came with Long valves, and tbh you can fit either, but the long ones are SO much better to work with0
